Swelling or Infection
Swelling in the gums, jaw, or face can be a sign of a dental infection such as an abscess. Infections can worsen quickly, so prompt care is important for your health and comfort.
What to do right now
- 1Call us right away — dental infections can spread and should not wait.
- 2Rinse gently with warm salt water to help keep the area clean.
- 3Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for swelling.
- 4Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the package.
- 5Avoid applying heat to the area, which can make swelling worse.
When to call us
Call immediately if you have facial swelling, a fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or pain that spreads. These can be signs of a serious infection that needs urgent care. If you cannot reach us and symptoms are severe, seek emergency medical care.
